Children’s Books We’ve Read This Week

Lisa: This week I read Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard by Jonathan Auxier. I give this 6 out of 5 stars. This second book in the Peter Nimble series kept up the quirkiness and adventure! Sophie is a bookmender and the last storyguard, meaning that she repairs books and protects them! She and Peter crack me up with their banter. Peter says he rescued her from the soldiers, and Sophie says that she is a party to attempted murder thanks to him. I’m hoping that there is another book in this series. Jonathan? Help! (Grades 4 to 6)

squishI also read Squish Super Amoeba by Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm, and give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I read this book because my younger son loves this series and told me it’s funny. I like the science tidbits throughout the book, and there is a section at the end of this book that includes a simple mold experiment. This is a great series for kids who enjoy humor or science (or both). (Grades 3 to 5)

Dominique & Lisa:
We both read The Poet’s Dog by Patricia MacLachlan and we give this outstanding book 6 poets-dogout of 5 stars. If you ask us about a dog book, this is the one we’re going to give you. When Teddy the dog rescues two children from a powerful winter storm, we learn about “the poet” and how much he meant to Teddy. This book is about the comforts of home, beauty, love, and compassion. Its message will ink itself into your heart. (Grade 1 through…forever.)
