The Star Wars Canon: Original Trilogy

The movies that sparked the minds of millions.

Star Wars, the brain child of George Lucas, began in the sixties and rocked the world with its innovative techniques for special effects, filming, and editing. In a very short time the first film became a pop culture classic and fans everywhere became enamored of the story and the galaxy Lucas created.

Join me for a brief look at the films that started it all.

The Original Trilogy ran from 1977 to 1983 and depicts events which occur after the events of the Prequel Trilogy. The events of these films will be introduced through the use of “BBY” and “ABY” a set of terms used in the Star Wars community to signify events took place a certain amount of years “Before the Battle of Yavin” or “After the Battle of Yavin” which takes place in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

Great care has been taken to reduce the amount of spoilers below, but some plot points must be revealed to discuss the films and their chronology.

0 BBY — Star Wars: Epsiode IV A New Hope takes place approximately 19 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and follows the trials of Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin Skywalker. In this film, Darth Vader, an evil Lord of the Sith, has the galaxy in a stranglehold and Luke must begin his journey to become a Jedi with the help of Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi and the comapnionship of Han Solo, a smuggler, and Princess Leia Organa of the rebellion.

3 ABY — Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back occurs 3 years following A New Hope and chronicles the continuing journey of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa as they and the rebellion come face to face with the full might of Darth Vader and the Empire. In this film Luke studies with Jedi Master Yoda on a distant uninhabited planet where he comes face to face with his darkest fears.

4 ABY — Star Wars: Episode VI The Return of the Jedi opens one year following the events of The Empire Strikes Back as Luke and Leia attempt to free Han from captivity before facing off once again with the Empire, Darth Vader, and Emperor Palpatine himself. A terrible truth was revealed to Luke about his family and parentage in The Empire Strikes Back, and he must struggle through the pain and confusion of history as his battle with the Empire comes to a close.
